My students need access to books that reflect who they are. I have students from different cultures and socioeconomic levels. I am at a high poverty school, and many of my students don't have access to books either because they do not have wifi or reading devices at home, or their parent(s) or guardian is unable to bring them to the library.
As a social studies teacher, there is a big emphasis on literacy. I am working to help grow my readers. If they are unable to read at grade level, or if they are not interested, then it will be difficult to engage them in a content where a majority of the primary sources are text based.
Having a classroom library also shows that I value reading and it's importance in life. I want students to always have access to text. I hand picked these books out, some because of their historical content and others because they are fun books to read and are of interest of my students.
