I teach a mariachi program at a middle school. They are 6th-8th graders.
The student demographic is almost 90% Hispanic. Some students come from different countries and in some cases, I have students who don't speak English. The transition of speaking a different language to English can be difficult for some of them. Above those obstacles, my students are extremely eager and motivated to learn. They love music especially because they can relate with their parents through mariachi. It gives them more reason to communicate with each other. We just had our winter concert last week. Both students' and parents' eyes lit up during the concert. These kids worked so hard since the beginning of the school year to perform at this concert.
The school I teach at is an exciting school to teach and learn at. We have after school programs for students who are struggling in their classes and for parents who want to learn how to help their kids. My school is a Title 1 school.
