My students are extremely curious. They see something and want to know how it works, and then get their hands on it and learn how to use it themselves. They are constantly searching for new journeys in art, whether it be painting, pottery, sculpture, woodworking, or collage.
My students come from a diverse ethnical background in a great neighborhood in Brooklyn where you can see the statue of liberty from the street. The neighborhood is one of the last remaining true working class neighborhoods in New York, and my students come to school with great curiosity and appetite for art.
Many of them haven't had much experience with art but love drawing and doodling in their notebooks. I believe it is my responsibility to expose them to as many different materials and artistic styles as possible so that they can discover and cultivate their own artistic identity.
