My students are warriors in every since of the word. They face circumstances and challenges that would cripple some adults, yet remain resilient through it all. Our school is very diverse with a large ESL community. In addition, we are a Title I school which means that 75% or more of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The larger percentage of my students (50% or greater) are below reading level by 2-3 years upon entering 5th grade; therefore fostering a love for reading is always my top priority. Each year I have the pleasure of seeing students who disliked reading begin to look forward to reading and students who normally fail our state standardized test pass and/or make great gains towards reading at grade level. In the picture above my students are taking part in a scientific approach to reading,in which they have to use an argumentation inquiry approach to support their claim.
