I am honored to teach 22 students from the heart of Fort Worth. We are made up of mostly Hispanic and African American students. 98 percent of our students are free lunch. The students who come to VZG have generally experienced more in life and how cold it can be than most people in America (and they are still in grade school). Yet, we have many with such a hunger to learn. Yes, we have our moments, like all schools do, but you cannot help but admire how hard most of these students will work if they know what they are doing it for. Just knowing that life can be good is enough for many here at VZG.
But we cannot forget those that do not realize that they can change their life situations. As educators, we have to work to reach ALL of our students. Making their learning fun, and allowing them to take charge in that learning is one way to do that. When a child feels empowered, it does not matter their situation.
