Through a special program, Trout In The Classroom, my classroom has been invited to again participate in a repopulation program of Trout into Virginia’s freshwater streams. Last year my class raised approximately 81 fry and successfully released them back into Virginia’s freshwater ecosystem. During the year, the ‘chiller’, which keeps the water temperature at approximately 52°F, stopped working and it is a necessity to successfully raise Trout. I was lucky last year to borrow a chiller from another school to complete the project.
Letting my students raise and take care of our state freshwater fish encourages them to become environmental aware. After this project is complete my students will have a better understanding of how to properly care for another creature and they will get the opportunity to release the fish in a wilderness setting, not normally visited by my students.
