Reading is a critical skill and increases in both complexity and necessity for knowledge-building with each grade level. The goal for this project is to give my 4th and 5th grade scholars access to digital texts, primarily audiobooks. The access to audiobooks is key because oral language stimulates vocabulary acquisition and retention which is critical for reading proficiency. "Most students lack repeated exposure to sophisticated spoken words and therefore do not have a large enough vocabulary to be proficient readers, which explains why nearly two-thirds of all U.S. 4th graders struggle with reading." [Tales2go.com]
These Samsung Galaxy tablets will level the reading playing field for my scholars and give them all equal opportunity to grow as readers, learners, and as individuals. For my struggling and reluctant readers as well as my students with limited English proficiency, the repeated exposure to sophisticated vocabulary through the Tales2Go audiobooks, will help close the vocabulary gap and promote reading achievement. The program is naturally scaffolded even for advanced learners as it introduces them to more complex texts because listening comprehension is up to 2 grade levels above their current reading level. This technology can clearly motivate all scholars, regardless of level or academic need, to read and grow in fluency, proficiency, and confidence in their reading skills.
The technology in this opportunity is a superior literacy tool and so much more! These tablets also give scholars access to educational apps and enable them to research any topic that may pique their interest while reading or during a lesson. They can also use the tablets to synthesize their learning and create presentations to showcase their research or book talks. These tech tools will empower my 4th and 5th graders to develop and apply their literacy skills like 21st Century Scholars!
