My school is in its first year in a rough part of the city. When training began in August, a special emphasis was placed on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). We were told to expect that many of our students had experienced trauma and that it would be more difficult for them to focus in class and retain what we had taught them. My SEL training only lasted a day, but the students have been working on their SEL competencies in their advisory lessons, which I do not teach.
I need to learn how to be proactive with SEL because too often students who have experienced trauma are left behind by our educational practices. The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) will offer eight sessions dedicated to SEL. These sessions will discuss topics such as welcoming learning environments, individualized learning pathways, kinesthetic activities and trauma-informed practices that will aid in my teaching and interactions with students who have experienced trauma.
I'd like to work with my students and support their efforts in building their self-awareness, social-awareness, self-management, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. I need to be able to teach the whole child and not focus only on teaching Spanish.
