I chose several wiggle chairs, bounce chairs, and floor desks for my project. As adults, we get to pick the environment in which we work. We can choose the chairs we spend hours in at a time, a profession that fits our movement preferences, and where we do our best work. Students in elementary school don't often get to make these kinds of important choices. I'd like my first graders to be afforded those same opportunities.
These new seating choices will allow the kids in my class to learn in their best space. They can choose a regular chair, one that wiggles or bounces, or to sit on the floor! This will aid in the learning process for them greatly.
Students that have trouble holding still will focus so much on sitting still that they aren't able to give any attention to learning. Some students work well in traditional chairs, and others really don't. Students that are able to pick a good environment for their bodies can put more attention on what's going on in their brain. These flexible seating options will help these kids focus on crucial, necessary academics.
