Our school's goal is for every child to read on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. Most of our students are minorities and in poverty. We want to increase the number of books they read each week. Our young students to take home 6-8 books nightly and read 10-20 new books each week! That's a lofty goal, but research shows that struggling students need more access to books than their grade-level peers. We do not have enough lower-level texts that students can feel successful reading. Most of the books we have are too hard. If we are going to move them to more difficult texts, we must first provide texts they can read!!
