Most of my students live in an underprivileged neighborhood, in the Bronx. Most of them come from low-income households. They lack basic necessities, and many have gone through traumatic events, which include: homelessness, emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse; domestic violence; family history of substance abuse or mental illness; divorce; abandonment; foster care placement, etc.
In my classroom students in practice mindfulness, become empowered to handle stress, deal with feelings; and gain the resources to implement effective strategies to obtain a calmed state of mind where they can focus on the task at hand.
This project is aiming at building on the students' ability to regulate their bodies, improve concentration, internalize relaxing exercises so they can remain in control even during stressful times, such as this.
