When people think of Language Arts and Social Studies classes, they may not think of "innovative", "future-driven", and "technology-based", but I'm here to change that perception. By adding 5 Chromebooks to my classroom, I will be able to create content that is stimulating and interactive. I plan to create small group rotations in order to accommodate my 29-34 students per class. In Language Arts, we will research current events to use for nonfiction text study, as well as use programs that differentiate articles based on each students' individual reading level. In Social Studies, we will look at Ancient Civilizations in new ways using Google Earth, virtual museum "field trips", and creative projects.
Using technology to enhance learning will keep ALL of my students engaged and help bring them into a 21st century education. My ideal classroom setting would be project and inquiry-based, where students are able to investigate, discover information, and create projects that reflect their knowledge effectively. I recently assigned a project that required my students to connect the Eightfold Path in Buddhism to the prompt "how to be more compassionate in school". I reserved one of our school's Chromebook carts and almost all of my students jumped right into making funny and brilliant videos based on the prompt. By giving them the freedom to create, my students were able to prove their Social Studies knowledge, and show me their creative strengths. I am so happy that I gave them the choice to use technology, and wish that I had access to laptops in the classroom daily. In the age of YouTube and constant internet connectivity, I want to connect my students to information and outlets that will enhance their love for learning.
