At my school we use a math curriculum that allows students to explore math concepts. Through this exploration we are continuously labeling what we notice, wondering, and making comparisons. As students explore finding the area of triangles, they used scissors to decompose parallelograms into two identical triangles and scholars made conjectures about their area, and how we could find the area of any triangle.
Scholars need tools to help them make sense of the mathematical concepts they are exploring to in order to truly make them their own and use them on a recurring basis in their mathematical experience.
