My students attend a culturally diverse, inclusive, Title I school in beautiful upstate New York. At this school, the poverty rate is 97% with 100% of the students receiving free breakfast, lunch and snack. I am in my sixth year teaching in this district.
When students walk into my classroom, they are surrounded in an oasis of peace and tranquility. I have soft instrumental music playing in the background. The harsh fluorescent overhead lights have soothing blue fabrics to create a soft glow. Bright, festive lanterns hang from the ceiling. Mural decals hide the paint that chips and peels off the walls. Soft pillows in the corner invite readers to cozy up with a good book.
Everything is intentional to reduce their anxiety and promote a space where students can focus to be successful. This is a space where students can look forward to coming to every day.
