My students are 6th, 7th and 8th grade young adults that come from a very poverty stricken environment. Many times the three meals that are provided to them at school are the only meals that they will eat in that day. They are taking care of siblings, homeless, in unstable or abusive households, lacking sleep and then are expected to come to school to learn math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, when the reality of it is that they have more pressing things on their minds, such as where am I going to sleep tonight or how will I eat dinner.
