Our school is an urban school in Oklahoma and serves 480 students in PreKindergarten through sixth grade. Most of the students come from lower socio-economic families. We have a very diverse population of students, including the visually-impaired and hearing-impaired students in our district.
The library is the heart of the school and our students love coming to the library to read, hear stories, and to learn. However, the educational emphasis on passing standardized tests and mastering basic skills has taken the excitement and fun out of learning for most of our students in the regular school day. I would like to create a new environment of excitement for learning in the library by giving all students the opportunity to read as well as explore, design, question, and create their own masterpieces.
