My students are kids at varying levels of English language acquisition. For most, this is the first time they've attended school, been with English speaking models, and been required to understand not only a new language but a new culture-the school culture. Our school also has a high percentage at the poverty level, as well as a high ELD group. Our school is small, with only 450 K-5 students, 3 Preppy-k classes, 4 Special Day classes(SDC), and 2 preschool classes.Because of the large SDC we also do a lot of mainstreaming. Our parents may be poor, but they are very involved in their student's education. We just had our Back to School Night, and out of my 32 students, only 4 families didn't attend, due to lack of transportation. I also have 2 parents volunteering everyday in my class. They don't let language or poverty stop them from valuing an education. This year I have 32 very excited and also anxious students, wanting to learn as much as they can.
