It is difficult for a teenager to visualize themselves as a scientist. Clothing styles and trends are extremely important to teenagers and even more so in impoverished areas. Taking these two facts in account gave me the idea of buying some disposable lab coats last year when the chemistry students facilitated a lab for their family members to come into the classroom to perform. You should have seen the pride on their faces as they donned the flimsy "coats". What if they had real lab coats?
As students advance from chemistry one to chemistry two, the distinction of wearing a lab coat versus a lab apron will foster a sense of pride in their advanced laboratory work as well as allow them to envision themselves in a future science career.
