My 5th graders this year are a spunky bunch oozing with enthusiasm and passion for learning. About 80% of my students are military children with one or both parents in the Army stationed in Hawaii. The other 20% are local children living in the district of our school. I have a very wide range of learners, from being well below 5th grade standards and struggling, to challenging the advanced students with project-based learning.
There are times, especially in math, when I'm running between 4-5 different learning groups during one math session to ensure they all get the most out of that period and understand the concept for that day. My students enjoy projects and presentations. Their interests are peaked when I connect real-world situations to what they are learning. They also get very excited when they're given a hands-on assessment that allows them to research and discover information all on their own to accomplish the assessment task. Their passion fuels mine.
