These books will be a great asset to our small (but growing) classroom library. Because the students are so diverse and come from different backgrounds, I want them to have the opportunity to read on their level and over topics/issues they can relate to in their own lives.
These books will allow my students the opportunity to choose great texts outside of typical canon pieces. My ultimate goal is to make my classroom library a place where my students can come and find rich diverse texts from a wide variety of authors.
I am passionate about project-based learning in my classroom. I believe it creates great motivation in my students. Boring worksheets are of no interest to my students. They want to create! My students will be using these texts to do individual book projects over texts are of high interest to them. After creating these projects they will present them to the class. This instruction practice of project-based learning will transform our normal book studies to incredible book explorations!
I hope to encourage many of them to continue to be lifelong readers long after they leave high school.
