I teach an endangered Alaska Native Language, Tlingit. In our classroom we learn HOW to learn a second language. We use immersion techniques like WAYK excersizes, TPR Story telling, games and daily conversation practice. Relatives and Elders are encouraged to learn and practice with the students in the classroom, home and community at large.
The Tlingit language became a written one only 40 years ago. Written resources for the classroom are still limited to adult students.Teachers of younger learners must develop their own curriculum with very limited financial support.
The Tlingit Culture and Traditional Knowledge is also taught to our students during the school year. The students learn about Native history before Western contact, why/how ceremonies are done today and how they are related. They also learn to prepare seal oil, sew leather, weave yarn headbands, twist fiber into rope and make sea salt from kelp.
