As a Latina in education, I've been so grateful for the opportunity to connect with my students on a deeper level of understanding outside of the content I teach. Hearing their stories and getting to peek inside their lives inspires me to be a better person and a better teacher.
Cesar Chavez once said, 鈥淲e need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community - and this nation.鈥 I couldn't agree more. Many times, our kids are told that for them, the sky is not the limit, rather the ceiling is; and unfortunately, they start to believe it. But of course, why wouldn't they when schools constantly leave out pieces of their history?
With your help, the 2 class sets of books my students will read are I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez and Dear Martin by Nic Stone. Both are written by women of color and discuss issues surrounding mental health, immigration, systemic racism and police brutality. All of which are important discussions for my students to think critically about since these are all issues they deal with in their own lives. When I graduated from the University of Texas I was reminded daily that what started there, would change the world. Help me change the one my students live in!
