My students come from lower socioeconomic families. They come from the poor areas of Richmond, California. Bad food habits and lack of home knowledge of nutrition affect the health of our students. Such impact is transferred into the students learning. Obesity is a big issue among minority children and who may not have insurance. Often times, poor lifestyle and food result in violent behavior, defiance at school, tardiness and also drop out of school. Majority of our students are Hispanics and African American. Many students come to school hungry because their families are poor. As a result, they eat the cheapest and poorest foods, thereby exposing themselves to the risks of obesity and diabetes.
Violence is high in this neighborhood, and as a result early exposure to education will make a difference.
