My school library is a well set-up library at the center of our school surrounded by the K-3 classrooms. We have a U-Shape book shelf set up with tables and chairs for students and my desk is at the entrance. We have a wide range of books on diverse subjects, story books, graphic novels, chapter books and magazines. We also have a small reference section for teachers.
I know that it is important to have an effective school library because of the positive impact it can have on the social, cultural and educational growth of students and it is a key ingredient to literacy and education.
All the students at our school visit library a couple of times each week and check out books once a week. Each student has a library card to use during their book check out. I am available to help locate and select books with students as per their needs.
The students have access to all levels of books and are responsible for finding their 鈥渏ust right鈥 book with assistance. Our Biography section is severely lacking in materials of interest to students today. My hope is to provide biographies that include more of the historical figures with whom they feel a connection, a favorite athlete or even a contemporary pop star so that we have a more enjoyable way for our students to explore and interest in their research.
I often hear students say that they love coming to the library and that the day they come to check out a book is one of their favorite parts of the school day. My personal goal is that all students here at our school feel welcome and encouraged to grow and learn through the books available here in the library.
