My awesome second graders come from a low socioeconomic background, with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (72%) and many of them live in homes
which house multiple families under the same roof. On average, 2-3 students in my classroom are considered homeless and struggle to find suitable housing. They qualify for assistance through The McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Some of these seven and eight-year-olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents work multiple jobs. Yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and the desire to learn. I am very passionate about bringing STEAM to my classroom. I feel that STEM provides students with the 4 C's; collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication.
