This year I will begin to prepare my 96 enthusiastic 7th grade students for high school and beyond. Learning to conduct research and support claims with factual evidence will give my students the power to influence others and effect change in their society.
However, my students were not born into a world that will readily accept them as competitive and progressive leaders. These are socioeconomically challenged students whose struggles are compounded by global recession. For most of them, their primary language is not English, and yet they have navigated the California public school system thus far. They live in urban neighborhoods, and both students and parents have pleaded with teachers like me for the opportunity to reach academic success and create a better life. These families have made the choice to enroll in an innovative magnet school, where the expectations are high, and students are college-bound.
