My school has been allowed to offer several new elective programs, one of them is the culinary arts program. This program is a great opportunity for students to learn basic life skills of cooking. This class will incorporate lots of different subject matter like the science behind cooking, the math used when making a recipe, the social aspect of what food offers people, and the creativity it takes to decorate a cake. The student will use the hot plates and the convection ovens to learn how to create a meal on a regular basis in class. We will start out learning how to cook an egg in multiple ways on the hot plates. This will then lead us to learning how to bake bread's, cookies, and cakes which we need the mixing bowls, measuring utensils and ovens for. The class will learn how to decorate cakes using the cake supplies we are asking for. We will finish the class off with the students creating their own recipes. Everyone is looking forward to this opportunity.
Unfortunately, we have been given only one kitchenette (which is big enough for at the most three people to cook on) for 30 to 40 high school students to use. Without the proper tools, we cannot teach students the freedom and creativity you feel when working in a kitchen. With your help, you are not only helping students learn life skills but you are giving them the opportunity to learn a love that could possibly lead to a career in culinary arts.
