As an inclusion class, we have students with special needs, English language learners, as well as typically developing students. Most of my students live in a very low-income area where resources are limited at home. In addition, many of their parents lack education. The kids look forward to coming to school each day where they socialize with their friends, build on communication and learn early childhood skills. They enjoy singing, dancing and just plain being silly. For many of them, this is the only exposure to books and educational material that they come in contact with. Pre-K is their first experience with school. If I can mold their mindset in a way that makes them love and value learning, it sets their educational career in a positive motion and hopefully keeps them going. The drop out rate is so high. I feel it's my responsibility to get them off to the right start.
