My students are in the first grade in a title one school in Nevada. Our school is located in a high poverty area. Everyday all of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students also receive food bags for the weekend. My students love learning and are just beginning to read and write. Our school strives to provide individualized instruction by grouping students for interventions and accelerations based on individual student abilities and through thoughtfully planning and explicitly teaching the standards.
If there is anything I appreciate about teaching in this area, it is that my students come from different backgrounds and families but the students and their families become a part of the school community when they come through our classroom doors.
