I am a behavior specialist at a title I school in Oakland, CA. My students are our school's highest needs children. They come from chronic traumatic backgrounds and as a result, struggle adjusting to school routines without additional academic, behavior, and social/emotional support.
These students are bright, creative, humorous, and loving, and for many of them, school is their safe place.
In order to create more structure and stability in these students' lives we are creating a de-escalation and sensory space for them in which they can re-learn how to regulate their bodies and emotions in healthy ways. (This project will be to support the de escalation space. I will be creating a secondary project for the sensory room.)
Learning now, as 5 year olds to 12 year olds, how to self-regulate emotions are skills that will carry over throughout their academic careers. It is not enough to teach students just academics--we must teach them the skills to persevere, to adapt, and to have self-confidence in themselves in order to access the complex academic tasks we ask of them. It is my goal that our students recognize the power they have within themselves to transform their own mindset and be successful in all that they do. By creating these specialized spaces, we will be able to make these goals into reality.
In advance, I and my students thank you deeply for your generosity.
