Something is different this year with my classroom community because of the house system. In years past, my students had trouble getting along with each other in the classroom and with other students within the school. Piloting the house system has been rigorous and rewarding. At the beginning of the year the students had a hard time communicating and being with each other after the instability of the pandemic previous year. The house system is designed into three teams: House Symphony, House Cadence, and House Harmony. We named them after music terms because our school is named after singer Marian Anderson. Each house has its own set of personalities and work ethics. House Symphony is very organized and always helpful to others. House Cadence is independent and laid back. House Harmony is creative and collaborative. Throughout this challenging year, my students have created a community in the classroom by showing encouragement, collaboration, and pride that extends outside of the classroom.
The materials I have selected will allow my students to create in a collaborative setting using house colors to promote house and school pride. My students love to work together to create projects or posters frequently in their houses. I requested items that will allow the students to make decorations and projects using materials that they would normally not have access too.
