We work and learn together at an Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore City. Our school is a Title 1 school, and the great majority of our teachers are rated ‘highly effective’. Even so, we are facing paralyzing budgetary concerns despite impressive PARCC scores, a limited suspension rate, and a partnership with the University of Maryland for clinical support. Put short, we lack the basic (and necessary) means to succeed and learn in the classroom; for example, as of today we are out of paper. While I’ve had generous help from family and friends to get me started, I’ll need continued support to get us through the remainder of the year with any hope of a reasonably successful outcome. Most of the items needed are basic teaching materials, such as composition books (each student needs one per quarter), pencils, hole-punch, a stapler, paper (copy paper and loose leaf) and markers. Building academic vocabulary is extraordinarily important, having a three-ring binder for students to use and create their own Vocabulary Journal would be a gift. Additionally, the three-ring binders can be re-used next year. I included basic projector/computer accessories, a sound bar and an HDMI cable. Many students are visual learners and having a clear audio system with so many students is essential. However, there are a few most expensive items that would seem unequivocally important: for example, a replacement bulb to for our classroom's digital projector. At present, the projector is our only point of access to the wider world beyond the immediate streets around us. As trivial as this may sound, awareness of the world and its opportunities helps to stimulate a sense of possibility, which in turn drives academic striving. Any support is appreciated.
