In preparation for my first year of teaching, I worked diligently to create the perfect classroom library. I went to yard sales, used book stores, Goodwill, libraries, and searched online retailers to build a strong collection of books. I am very pleased with the selection of books I have available to my students and they love it too! But, there is something missing... a comfortable place to read the books!
Research shows that the most effective way to improve students' reading ability is to get them READING! My students are expected to read independently for 30 to 45 minutes every day. Currently my students only options are to read at their desks or sit on the floor. As you can imagine, sitting at a desk for that long does not foster a love for reading! I want to provide my students with comfortable seating options where they can focus and really enjoy reading.
The best part about this project is that my students had a voice in the furniture that we hope to receive. Let me tell you, they were so excited they could not contain themselves! I cannot wait to provide them with these pillows and chairs and show to them how much people care about their education.
