In my classroom this year, I am hoping to fully implement flexible seating. Flexible seating will provide my active students with an opportunity to choose which seating arrangement is best for his/her individual learning style.
Since second graders can often be fidgety or restless while sitting in hard and uncomfortable chairs, flexible seating will give my students a chance to spread out during work time, fully engage in their learning, and be comfortable at the same time. Higher student engagement equals more learning.
With flexible seating also comes a lesson in responsibility for my students. Students will learn how to make appropriate choices in regards to seating and behavior, which will make them more successful in the classroom. I am hoping to add items such as balance ball chairs, wobble chairs, fidget bands, and scoop seats to my classroom for flexible seating.
