My students are a very diverse group of young people with different cultural backgrounds and histories. The variety of people at our school lends to a real mosaic of experiences and each student is an important contributing factor.
However, there is something lacking.
When I was a kid, my mom used to have me weigh the produce for her at the grocery store. I cooked with my dad at home and learned to pour exact measurements. I found the mass of "treasures" found in the backyard with a beat-up old balance my grandmother gave me.
My students don't share that same story. Here, parents are struggling to make ends meet and don't have the time or resources to enrich their children's lives in the same way. Students are coming to school handicapped by a lack of life experience. They are bright, creative people- future innovators - who need a chance. A quality education is an absolute lifeline for these children.
