I have chosen these supplies to specifically address the needs of these students. They need markers, scissors, and chart paper for drawing and collaboration in groups. They will use these supplies during project-based learning, which is backed by research to increase student knowledge, collaboration, higher-level thinking, and engagement.
Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul." Being a brand new teacher, I don't have a large or diverse classroom library. I have chosen book sets because my students love both of these book series. It is encouraging to them to read when one of their peers is reading a book from the same series or author. Having many kinds of Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House books in the classroom would encourage them to read more and engage in discussion with their peers.
The dry erase markers and boards are to help the students be engaged and actively learning during a lesson or while working in groups or with a partner. These boards will be "theirs" for the school year, which will help them develop responsibility and respect.
