I teach kindergarten and have ten students with autism. We are at a school that is 80% free lunch, and 90% second language learners. On our campus we have four special day classrooms that mostly have students with severe autism - many of whom are non-verbal. I used the ipod touch for the first time in my kindergarten special education classroom this past year, and it was an amazing tool. One of my non-verbal (formerly screaming) students was able to use it to communicate! He went from screaming when he wanted something to using icons to formulate sentences (like, "I want rice microwave please.")
