In my ELA classroom, I stress the importance of students always trying their best and taking pride in their work. I also emphasize the importance of reading and explain how independent reading will help them succeed across all subject areas. Because our school has such a diverse population, many of our students face various challenges that prevent them from learning. A high percentage of the students receive free and reduced lunch and also struggle to have other basic needs met. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are notably restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures, and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many students come to school disengaged, thus increasing the struggles they already face.
