A high percentage of my students are low-income. They come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. Most of my students have seen some sort of violence or crime first hand. Enough that most of them think it's normal. Our school has worked very hard to develop an inclusive culture. It not only has high academic standards, but also prides itself on social emotional development and restorative justice. I want to build on the work being done at my school in these areas. I believe math journals is the way to make that happen.
