My students are a combination of reluctant and avid readers that have never been given the opportunity to experience the adventure of classic literature, retold by fluent reader models. My students come from many walks of life and some have not had the best opportunity to explore books. My school is in an affluent neighborhood, and we do not receive any Federal, State, or City money. The only money we have goes directly into materials for textbooks to support our standards, leaving little to no money for extras.
Listening libraries are far to come by without the use of extra money and without being in a primary grade. My students are older 5th graders that would like the opportunity to listen to books as well as hold them in their hands. My ESL students require audio books to listen for English models, but also want to listen to books that are age appropriate. Many of my students are reaching for higher level books, but keep them shelved because they fear the thicker novel.
