To be able to calm yourself (self-regulate) when emotions are running high is a learned skill. One way to help children learn how to self-regulate is by providing them with a calming space. A calm down corner is a designated space in the classroom with the sole intent of being a safe space for a child to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need an opportunity to regain their emotional and physical control. Often, these spaces are equipped with comforting objects and soothing materials that can promote mindfulness, breathing, and reflection. Our goal in creating a calm down corner is to give our students a space where they will feel safe recognizing and regulating their emotions in a healthy way.
Calm down corners help children practice identifying feelings and emotions. When our students can identify their own emotions, they are better able to manage stress, self-regulate, and control their impulses. Having a classroom space that is specifically designed to support them emotionally and physically helps our students feel safe and comfortable. When our students feel safe and comfortable, they are more likely to let their guard down and process different feelings. Learning how to communicate one鈥檚 feelings and emotions can be difficult, but calming spaces help our students practice mindfulness and develop skills they need to identify their emotions and communicate them when necessary. By supporting the development of communication skills, we support our students in growing and forming stronger relationships with others and develop skills in empathy.
