Studies show that daily reading is the fastest, most effective way to boost reading levels, vocabulary and comprehension. As a departmentalized reading teacher, I only have 75 minutes of instruction with each of my classes daily.
Providing them with easy access to diverse and engaging books that they are excited to read at home will help ensure that they are able to progress steadily toward their literacy goals--and given the stakes, the urgency for this is sky-high.
I have requested used books in good condition to cut costs, maximize the impact of your dollar, and support the eco-sustainably. Frugality and conservation are also values that I instill in my students.
As the oldest kids at our school, the 5th and 6th grade students who benefit from this library will also set an example to scholars in lower grades of strong literacy skills and enthusiasm for reading, causing a ripple effect that could compound for generations.
