The students in my classroom are 7th-8th graders on the Autism spectrum. They are learning to navigate a new school with new teachers and peers and working towards academic and behavioral goals along the way. The students represented in my class want to be able to learn and socialize with others just like their peers do. They need extra supports in academics and behavioral goals to do so, however, that does not make them any less than the other students in school. Many students become easily overwhelmed especially when entering a new school and all of the hormonal changes that happen through middle school- my students included. Our students are one of kind and deserve to be treated just like any other student. We hope to create a space in this class where not only our immediate students feel welcomed but other students in the building also feel safe when entering the room.
