I teach 16 wonderful first graders at a Title-One school in Las Vegas. 90% of my students are bilingual and 100% are low-income. Most of them do not have someone at home to read to them or with them. Or they do have someone at home, such as a parent or older sibling, but they speak Spanish and don't feel that they can help their child read. The only time my students are engaged with a book is at school.
