I teach English to grades 9-11 at a relatively small high school located on an island. Many of my students have never lived anywhere else in their lives; a large number of them have not traveled very far from here. Through reading diversely, they are able to enlarge their personal world by learning more about the world we live in, along with the alternate universes they discover in science fiction or fantasy novels. Many of them have previously seen reading as a chore after being assigned whole-class novels in other English classes, and it is my goal that the focus on relevant, high-interest literature in my class will show them how and why reading can be fun as well as informative.
