At the beginning of the school year, I started with a small classroom library. My students enjoy having time to independently pick out a book and dive into a story on their own. I have watched as students have scoured our classroom shelves looking for more to read. I believe in the importance of books. They provide a safe space for students to explore ideas and perspectives that may be challenging, inspiring, or engaging. The characters in books also help give students a model on how to build connections, develop empathy, and work through problems. My hope is that by choosing books with my students in mind, I can provide a productive classroom library: a way for students to see the world from new angles as well as to reflect on themselves and their own personal feelings.
