Seeing and participating in an organized classroom community early on is essential not only for the sanity of the teacher, but to set an example for students later on in life. An adjustable whiteboard easel for morning meeting means that learning can be engaging and student-led. A focal area for community supplies as well as table caddies encourages sharing as well as management and allocation of resources. People-colored crayons help to promote equity during our unit on identity to illustrate that "Crayola Peach" is not the universal standard and everyone deserves representation, even in supplies and art materials.
Much of early childhood learning is dependent on structure and organization (especially in areas such as learning environment) so students can engage in productive chaos elsewhere in the day.
