The elementary school I work in has about 430 students, most of whom come from low income families of various backgrounds. Many of the students are English language learners or Nonstandard English speakers. The lowest performing groups at my school are English Language Learners, Latino students, and African American
students.
I teach in a Spanish Bilingual Classroom where more than 90% of students are English Learners. They often come into second grade with low reading and writing scores in Spanish and English. Many of the students are not yet independent thinkers and have difficulty articulating their thoughts both orally and in writing. Often they lack confidence to problem solve and defend their thinking. My goal is to show them that they can do more than they think they can.
