The assorted books all chosen for this bookshelf were all recommended by the Lucy Calkins Reader's Workshop project for social issues book clubs in 7th and 8th grade.
My classroom desperately needs fresh, exciting, and relevant fiction to engage middle schoolers in reading and discussing social issues. Students will be so excited to receive and read the specific books in this bookshelf and give them the invaluable experience of reading for pleasure.
The lessons in these books include building positive and empathetic relationships, being proud of your identity, becoming aware of greater social and political issues, and including others with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
