Research has shown that students often need to move their bodies in order to focus on their learning.
Sitting still for hours each day is an unrealistic expectation for kids who have bodies that just want to move. When they are asked to sit still in class, my students wiggle, tap, and pace because they are . This constant movement can be a distraction to other students when the tapping or stomping creates noise...that's where flexible seating options come in.
Flexible seating options include wobble stools, wiggle seat cushions, scoop chairs, stability balls, yoga mats, and resistance bands for chair legs. These various seating options will allow students to choose a tool that helps them focus and do their best in school.
Each child is different, so one option won't work for all students. Some students have requested a wiggle seat cushion because it allows them to wiggle while they work. Others have requested bands for their feet to kick or bounce on鈥hen their feet are moving, the rest of their body can focus.
